CHAPTER SEVEN
âCOME on, time for bed.â Lewis spoke above her, and Martha opened her eyes, huge and dark in the dim light. There was something odd about his voice, but she couldnât pinpoint what it was.
âIâm too tired to move,â she managed. âI think Iâll stay here.â
âYouâd be better off in bed.â Lewis held down a hand. âHere, Iâll help you up.â
Martha stared at his hand. She had the oddest feeling that her whole life had come down to this moment, that she had reached the point where her future forked. Taking his hand would lead one way, refusing it another.
She shook her head slightly. This was silly. She was so tired she wasnât thinking straight. Lewis wasnât offering her a life-changing choice. He was offering her a hand to help her upright.
She smiled wearily up at him. âSorry, Iâm just a bit dopey,â she said, and took his hand.
As soon as she felt his fingers close firmly around hers, Martha knew that she had made a mistake. He drew her up, but it was as if all her bones had liquefied, so that she had to cling to his hand as the only thing holding her upright. Her legs gave way and she would have fallen if Lewis hadnât felt her buckle and clamped her instinctively to him.
Martha gasped at the feel of his body, just as hard and solid as she had imagined. His bare shoulder was only millimetres from her mouth, his skin a breath away from her own. With one detached part of her mind she knew that it should be possible to avoid Lewisâs gaze and step past him with a polite apology, but somehow she couldnât do it. Something a lot stronger and more insistent made her lift her eyes instead and look straight into Lewisâs face, and what she read there made the breath leak from her lungs.
There was a long, long moment when time seemed to stretch into infinity as they stared at each other. Afterwards, Martha was never sure what had shattered that breathless pause. Did she kiss Lewis, or did he kiss her? It didnât matter, anyway. All that mattered was that in a burst of glorious release from the tension they were kissing, deep, hot, hungry kisses, and it felt wonderful.
Gasping, still kissing, they sank back down on to the sofa, and she wrapped her arms around him, craving the feel of his body, so hard, so sure against hers. Dizzy with the relief of being able to touch him at last, she ran her hands over his bare back, down his flanks, up over his shoulders, revelling in the feel of him, and all the time his mouth was demanding, his hands insistent, exploring, under her knees, over her thighs, easing beneath her shirt until she shuddered and arched towards him.
God, it felt so good! Martha couldnât remember how she had been able to convince herself that it would be a bad idea. It was a great idea. A fantastic idea.
